1. What Is Front-End Proof of Work (PoW)?
When you click to send a question, the browser often stutters inexplicably for 1–3 seconds, and CPU usage instantly spikes to the max.
This is because OpenAI injects a piece of PoW (Proof of Work) hash computation code into the web front end, similar to Bitcoin mining.
2. The Strong Correlation Between Difficulty and Model Degradation
- Clean residential IP: The system issues an extremely low PoW computation difficulty (usually completed within 100 milliseconds), giving you direct access to top-tier compute;
- Flagged data center IP: To prevent crawler abuse, the system issues an extremely high-difficulty hash challenge. If your browser takes more than 2 seconds on the PoW, this means you have been marked as High Risk in the risk-control model, and the subsequent responses will almost certainly be routed to a degraded channel.
